The Sublime Paintings  -   Artist Statement

What is sublime in a contemporary sense? Beauty, wow, fear or is it something more or a combination? Is it the sheer unpredictable nature of the human state today?

The paintings are a cognitive and emotional response to the sublime nature of the now from the perspective of the artist. Each painting represents a sublime moment. A moment of understanding and realisation. Seemingly chaotic and in flux, the paintings are landscapes that represent infinity, and that there is more out there than we can see or even understand.

The work draws on elements of the 18th century sublime oil painting traditions of enigma and beauty to question the contemporary sublime. Arguably individual and only apparent when viewed or experienced, is it what we subconciously seek when we explore and travel, do something different, or even go about our lives. Is it the ultimate truth, but that is incomprehensible?

Many things inspire moments of understanding and we as a people know and understand more than we ever did, but looking at the nature of the world today, it seems we still don’t know or understand enough.
