Green Space

Green Space is about green areas in a city.  Small pockets of nature where you can stop for a minute and breathe.  With these paintings I am exploring some traditional and contemporary abstract painting  techniques to create some diverse abstract work.

The Square  Oil on Canvas - 100x100x3.5cm

There are a few squares here and there in the city but the main one is probably the central square with the cathedral at the centre surrounded by a repurposed graveyard which serves as a park and then the surrounding buildings.  This is an abstract and surreal view of an aspect of that square but it could be any city square to be fair.  I like the graveyard as a living space as well as the continued resting space for the dead.

'Morning Mist' Oil on Canvas

The green areas in this painting are not green in the sense of colour. But allude to the shadows and mist of the morning and the blue tones found at that time of  day.  The experience of stepping out into the chill morning air.

City Grid 30x40cm approx, oil on canvas.

I like to mosaic together ideas and elements of an aesthetic or emotional response using a grid and I also like to think of the city as a grid with its various compartmentalised areas.  Working in an expressionistic manner is quite satisfying especially using oil paints which blend really nicely.  Here I wanted the colours to really sing!

Corner Of The Park 100x100x3.5cm, oil on canvas.
I love the park spaces in the city and we are quite lucky with our park.  There are some really great red and pink planting near the ponds which always inspire me.  The park also has nooks and areas just off the paths in the corners of the park  which are mysterious and fun .  Shaded and away from the main areas.

This painting proves that from an abstract point of view a painting can be 'finished' at any layer.  My paintings are  a result of many layers which I like to call 'Avatars,   Each Avatar could be the finished painting however I carry on if the vibe is there .   With this painting the vibe was definitely there to carry on however a fan loved the painting as is and had to have it so this is the last Avatar for this painting.  I love input about the paintings and analysing the visual impact which triggers something in the viewer. Some progress shots are at the end of this feed for this painting.

Semi Abstract Landscape

Below are a couple of semi abstracts alluding to a feeling of calm within a busy city space.

Green Space   Acrylic on Canvas  100x100cm

The action of painting a 'landscape' is actually quite therapeutic and I would recommend it!

Work in Progress

I was working on a variety of surfaces.  Some plen air, some studio work.  Below I have recorded a studio painting, 1x1 metres to see how it develops.   I rather think of it as the word game you played when you were in primary school.  You  start with a word and change a letter to make a new word.  At some point all the letters have changed and the word is quite different from what you began with.   I dont usually paint all in one day.  I will revisit the  painting over a period of time changing it.  Sometimes a lot changes, sometimes small areas.  This work in progress will probably be quite different at the end which may take a while so check back for progress.

Day 1  -  I started with a 1x1 metre square canvas.  Already primed and ready to go.  At this stage I am just laying down some colour and texture using acrylic and acrylic ink.

Day 2  - So it was quite busy and I forgot to take a pic of the next couple of steps but in the end it became blended and the colour palette started to emerge.

Day 3  - Here I added further interest and some tones.  Keeping to a colour palette of indigo, ochre, yellow cad and sap green.  Too many yellows?  We will see!

Day 4  - Colour palette change slightly.  Atmospheric and moody with a veil of white.

Day 5  - Needed more colour and fun marks.  Added some ink and also used some orange.
