The Painting Portal

I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to add to this project except that I wanted it to be a sort of journal of some of my experiments which often work and sometimes don't.  Scroll to see the various different experiments in painting that I have been doing.

Postcard Art

+++++++++++

I like the idea of Inktober.  Its a month long and artists will draw everyday as a way to make up a series of work or to perfect something.  I usually participate in the form of Paintober anyway on Instagram but this year I thought I would share via the The Painting Portal and just experiment with different ways you can use colour to make what I called 'Mood Flags'.

Collage Painting

++++++++++++++

I explored a bit of collage art using acrylic 'skins'.  This was quite fun and a definite departure from what I usually do.  However nice to experiment and share the technique.

Landscape Abstracts

+++++++++++++++++

Landscapes remain a firm favourite when painting.  Usually the work starts as a landscape anyway and might progress and become more abstract or totally abstract.  I am enjoying sharing these works on paper and canvas and also in sketchbooks.

Painting Motifs and Pattern

++++++++++++++++++++++

I love motifs and creating pattern.  I think this stems from my childhood when I used to draw and paint and then later when I used to create embroidery and textile art patterns.   Particularly inspired by nature and flowers.

Abstract Painting

++++++++++++++

This is the sort of thing I love.  Just messing about with line and colour to create overlapping textural pieces.

Watercolour Abstract Organics

My experiments are coming along and I am liking this graphic type work. It's still abstract and intuitive but less layers!

Abstract Watercolour Landscapes

Painting landscape with an abstract view is always fun and relaxing.  I usually do tiny ones but larger scale works have a sense of drama.

Lots of ways to watercolour.   Experimentation is key.

Liking the soft palette and quby effects of this one.

I am having fun with a bit of journalling alongside the watercolour.  Inspos have been Islamic Art and architecture in general, not just Islamic.  And stylised imagery.

I have picked up a few new to me materials which I am experimenting with.

Painting from photographs

I am teaching some workshops and demos on how to paint from photographs.

It isn't about photorealism.  Its about abstracting elements you can work with.

You should be able to abstract from any photograph with my magic formula!

Painting The Pandemic Years 2020-2021

The past two years have not been without trial and difficulty.  Small works on canvas and paper were my main staple at the time and I enjoyed working this way. The following are a couple of works I completed.  Click here for more!

Stay At Home Inspirations

April 2020

Flowers are great for colour and vibrancy.  If you are a flower painter you will have loads to do.  I am more abstract and really take the ethos of the flower rather than the aesthetic.  But they are so good to look at and get colour inspiration from.  It will be interesting to see what we develop over the next few weeks of lockdown.  I have certainly been inspired by colour and variations in tone and the abstract qualities that flowers possess.

Biking Inspirations

March 2020

Travelled about in the Worcestershire countryside on my bike.  Some great vistas to be had of impending rain.  Other bike rides included journeying to my studio.

Exhibitions

March 2020

Went into Caspians on the Stratford Road for a pizza and at the back they had a couple of great calligraphic pieces of work.  Great work guys.  Keep it up!
